A major question is whether MS Dhoni will play as an uncapped player in IPL 2025. Ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, there’s speculation about whether Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will retain their most successful captain.
Dhoni Could Be Retained for 4 Crores
Recently, there was a meeting between the BCCI and IPL franchise owners where various issues were discussed. During this meeting, CSK requested the BCCI to reintroduce an old rule that considers players who have retired from international cricket for five years or more as uncapped players. The BCCI did not respond at that time, but according to a report by News18, this rule might be reinstated for IPL 2025. If this happens, MS Dhoni would be classified as an uncapped player, making it easier for CSK to retain him.

If the BCCI implements this rule for IPL 2025, retaining Dhoni would be simpler for CSK, and the franchise could keep him for 4 crores. A BCCI source mentioned that there is a strong possibility that the old rule could be reintroduced. Discussions have taken place, and details about this rule will be included when the player regulations are announced. On the other hand, if CSK retains Dhoni for 4 crores, their budget will increase, as Dhoni was retained for 11 crores up to IPL 2024.
