The England cricket team has appointed a new head coach for their white-ball formats. Due to England’s recent underwhelming performances in both ODI and T20 cricket, this decision was made. Brendon McCullum, the head coach of England’s Test team, has now been appointed as the head coach for the white-ball formats as well. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has officially announced this change. McCullum takes over the role from Matthew Mott, who had been in the position since 2022.
Brendon McCullum’s New Responsibility
Brendon McCullum has been associated with England’s Test team since 2022 and has now extended his contract until 2027. Starting from early 2025, he will take on the responsibility for the ODI team alongside the Test team. Meanwhile, Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim head coach for the upcoming series against Australia and the tour of the Caribbean later this year.
England Cricket’s Managing Director, Rob Key, stated, “I am delighted that Brendon has chosen to take on both roles with England. I believe we are incredibly fortunate to have a coach of his quality fully committed to English cricket. It’s particularly exciting to now be able to unify all our teams, and we’re ready to face all the challenges that lie ahead.”

McCullum’s Reaction to Becoming Head Coach
Brendon McCullum, England’s new head coach, said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Test team, and I am excited to extend my role to include the white-ball teams. This new challenge is something I am ready to embrace, and I look forward to working with Jos Buttler and the team to build on the strong foundations already in place.”
It’s worth noting that Brendon McCullum brings significant coaching experience to the table. After retiring from cricket, he decided to pursue a career in coaching. McCullum has previously served as the head coach of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders and has also coached the Trinbago Knight Riders to a Caribbean Premier League title.
