With the IPL retention list finalized, the focus now shifts to which players will join which teams for the upcoming season. All eyes are set on November 24 and 25, when the IPL 2025 mega auction will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The BCCI announced this date on November 5, and now the countdown for this mega event has begun. This auction promises to be exciting, especially with big names like Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul expected to attract high bids. While everyone will be watching these top players, there’s also considerable interest around Thomas Jack Drecka, who will be the first-ever cricketer from Italy to participate in the IPL auction.

On Tuesday, BCCI not only confirmed the date and venue for the mega auction but also shared the number of players registered, as well as their countries. By the registration deadline on November 4, a total of 1,574 players had signed up, although only up to 204 players will ultimately be selected for the next season.

Who is Thomas Jack Drecka?

Naturally, players from countries like Australia, South Africa, England, West Indies, and New Zealand dominate the list, but Italy’s entry caught the most attention. Italy isn’t known for cricket, especially compared to its fame in sports like football and motorsports. So, it’s surprising to see an Italian cricketer in the IPL auction. Initially, some might have thought of former Australian batter Joe Burns, who recently joined the Italian team and made some notable contributions, but he is not part of the auction.

Drecka also has experience in franchise cricket, having played in Canada’s Global T20 League, where he claimed 11 wickets in 6 matches for the Brampton Wolves, placing him in the second spot for wicket-takers.

The Special Connection with Mumbai Indians

Drecka trained to refine his pace bowling skills at Australia’s Power Pace Cricket Academy. But why did he decide to enter the IPL auction? One reason could be his connection with the Mumbai Indians. This Italian pacer was recently signed by MI Emirates in the UAE’s ILT20 league for the upcoming season. Given that the franchise chose him for one league, there’s a possibility that Drecka registered for the IPL auction on Mumbai Indians’ recommendation.
