Indian pacer Mohammed Shami’s potential return to the team during the ongoing series in Australia has become a hot topic. The experienced bowler has been absent from the national squad for a considerable time. After India’s bowling performance faltered in the second Test in Adelaide, demands for Shami’s return have intensified. Captain Rohit Sharma, however, has provided an update that has left fans a bit anxious. According to Rohit, the 34-year-old pacer is dealing with knee swelling again, but the doors to the Indian team remain open for him.

India suffered a 10-wicket defeat in Adelaide, allowing Australia to level the five-match Test series at 1-1. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Rohit said, “We are monitoring Shami closely because he experienced knee swelling again while playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. This has affected his preparation for Test matches here. We want to proceed cautiously and not rush him into action, as it could lead to further complications.” Rohit emphasized that the team wants to be completely sure before bringing Shami back into the squad.

The captain added, “It has been a while, and we don’t want to put pressure on him to return prematurely. Some professionals are closely monitoring Shami, and we’ll make a decision based on their advice. They are keeping a close watch on him for every match. That said, the doors are always open for Shami. He can join the team and play anytime.” Shami hasn’t played any matches for India since the 2023 ODI World Cup final. He has been out of action for an extended period due to ankle surgery.

Shami made his competitive cricket comeback in November, playing a Ranji Trophy match for Bengal. He is currently representing Bengal in the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Recently, reports suggested that Shami’s playing kit had already been sent to Australia, with only formal fitness clearance from the NCA’s medical team pending. A source close to Shami told PTI, “His Indian kit has already been sent to Australia. He will complete the Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament and then depart for Australia.”

India and Australia’s second Test began on December 14, with the third Test scheduled to start on December 26. Fans are eagerly awaiting confirmation of Shami’s return to the squad, as his presence could be pivotal for India in the series.
