Delhi Capitals is undergoing rapid changes ahead of IPL 2025. Recently, they removed Ricky Ponting from the position of head coach. Following his departure, the franchise was in search of a new head coach, and that search has now been completed. According to a report from Cricbuzz, former Indian cricketer Hemang Badani will take on the role for IPL 2025.
He has been appointed as the head coach for the next two seasons. Badani has played 44 international matches for India and was previously part of the coaching staff at Sunrisers Hyderabad under Brian Lara, where he worked as a fielding coach and scout. Meanwhile, there are reports that Sourav Ganguly may also be removed from the Delhi Capitals after Ricky Ponting.
Is Delhi Capitals Going to Remove Ganguly?
Sourav Ganguly was appointed as the Director of Cricket for Delhi Capitals in 2023. Recent reports suggest that the franchise might also let him go following Ponting’s exit. This speculation arises because Venugopal Rao, a friend of the new head coach Hemang Badani, has been appointed as the Director of Cricket for the team.
However, it remains unclear whether Venugopal will handle this responsibility solely for the Delhi Capitals team or for the entire franchise. It is worth noting that the franchise owns teams in leagues besides IPL, including the Major League Cricket in the USA, South Africa’s T20 league, and ILT20.
Experience with Delhi Capitals
Hemang Badani and Venugopal Rao have played together for a long time in the Chennai League for MRF. Additionally, both are known for their collaboration and have previously worked for the franchise’s subsidiary teams, particularly in the UAE’s ILT20 and Major League Cricket in the USA. Now they have received significant responsibilities in the IPL.
The management of Delhi Capitals has granted them complete freedom to choose their coaching staff along with their new responsibilities. It is also reported that former Indian fast bowler Munaf Patel could join Delhi Capitals and may be appointed as the bowling coach for the franchise in the IPL.
