Duleep Trophy 2024 Schedule

The prestigious Duleep Trophy 2024 begins today, Thursday. This red-ball tournament will be held in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. This will also mark the start of India’s domestic cricket season for 2024-25.

Four Teams to Participate

The first-class red-ball tournament will feature four teams: India A, India B, India C, and India D. The 16th season of the Duleep Trophy will be quite special, as it previously included six teams but will now have only four. These teams were selected by the national selection committee.

Group Stage Matches

On the first day of the tournament, two matches will commence. From September 5 to 8, the first match will be between Team A and Team B, while Team C will face Team D in Anantapur. Under the round-robin format, each team will play a four-day first-class match against the other three teams, making a total of six matches. Each team will play three matches, and the team with the highest points at the end of the tournament will be declared the winner.

Ishan Kishan to Miss First Round

Several young Indian players will participate in this domestic tournament, including Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer. However, wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan will not play in the first round due to a hamstring issue. He is part of India D, led by Shreyas Iyer. The BCCI confirmed this, stating, “Wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of the first round of the Duleep Trophy due to a back injury sustained during the ongoing All-India Buchi Babu tournament. The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring his condition and working towards his swift recovery.”

Sanju Samson Replaces Ishan Kishan

Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson has been included in the team in place of Ishan Kishan. However, it is expected that KS Bharat will fulfill the wicketkeeper role for India D in the first round. Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna from India A will also miss the first-round matches. The BCCI stated, “Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna is nearing the completion of his rehab following surgery on his left quadriceps tendon. Therefore, he will not play in the first round of the Duleep Trophy.”

Rishabh Pant’s Return

Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, returning to long-format cricket after a road accident in 2022, will be a major attraction in the Duleep Trophy starting Thursday in Bengaluru and Anantapur. He will play for Team B, led by Abhimanyu Easwaran, against Team A, led by Shubman Gill, at Chinnaswamy Stadium.
