The England cricket team is currently touring New Zealand for a three-match Test series. Under the captaincy of Ben Stokes, the team secured a dominant victory in the first match and is leading the series 1-0. The second Test is being played in Wellington, where on the second day, England scored 500,000 runs in Test cricket, setting a new world record. They became the first team in history to achieve this milestone. England reached this feat during their second innings on Saturday, December 7.
World Record in 1,082 Tests
England’s team made history by becoming the first to score 500,000 runs in Test cricket. They achieved this milestone in their 1,082nd Test match. They are now the team with the most runs in Test cricket. Australia holds the second spot, having scored 428,794 runs in Tests. The Indian team has scored 278,700 runs in Test cricket.
England also holds the record for the most Test centuries. Their batsmen have scored 929 Test centuries so far. Australia ranks second with 892 centuries, while India’s batsmen have scored 552 centuries.
England on the Brink of Series Victory
In the Wellington Test, England scored 280 runs in their first innings and dismissed New Zealand for just 125, taking a 155-run lead. In their second innings, England scored 378 runs at a rate of 4.97 runs per over in just 76 overs, losing 5 wickets. By the end of the second day, England’s lead had grown to 533 runs. Four English batsmen scored half-centuries in this innings. Ben Duckett scored 92, Jacob Bethell made 96, Harry Brook scored 55, and Joe Root contributed 73 runs. Ben Stokes is still at the crease, having made 35 runs.
Earlier, Harry Brook had scored a century (123 runs) in the first innings. With the current position, England has firmly taken control of the match and is likely to win. If they do, they will secure the series victory. However, this result will not affect their standing in the World Test Championship, as they are already out of the race.
