The Indian cricket team suffered a 0-3 defeat in the Test series against New Zealand. This loss has made it a significant challenge for the team to reach the final of the World Test Championship. Now, the Indian team needs to win the five-match Test series against Australia 4-0 to secure a spot in the final.
Before departing for the Australia tour, the head coach of the Indian team, Gautam Gambhir, addressed a press conference today (11 November). Gambhir answered numerous questions with composure. Here are the key updates from Gambhir’s press conference:
Will Rohit Sharma Play, Who Will Open in the First Test?
When asked about Rohit Sharma’s participation in the first Test, Gambhir said, “There is no confirmation regarding Rohit Sharma yet. Hopefully, he will be available. You will know everything before the series begins. If Rohit is unavailable, KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Easwaran are our opening options. I cannot reveal the playing XI; we will go with the best combination. Bumrah is the vice-captain, so he will definitely lead if Rohit is absent.”
Big Statement on KL Rahul
Gambhir highlighted KL Rahul’s versatility, saying, “KL Rahul can open, bat at No. 3, and even at No. 6. That’s a good thing, as not many players offer such options.”
Praise for Nitish and Harshit
Gambhir also commended Nitish Reddy and Harshit Rana, stating, “Harshit played well against Assam in the Ranji Trophy. We felt he has sufficient bowling experience. We’ve selected the best team, and now it’s time to move forward. Nitish Reddy is talented, and when needed, he will deliver for us. This is the best group of players chosen to represent the country.”
Support for Rohit and Kohli
Addressing concerns about Rohit and Virat Kohli’s form, Gambhir said, “There is no worry about their form. They have performed incredibly well in the past, achieved a lot for Indian cricket, and will continue to do so. The dressing room is full of hunger after what happened in the last series.”
Talking about the loss to New Zealand, Gambhir acknowledged, “We were completely outplayed.”
