Before announcing the ICC Awards 2024, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed the Best ODI Team of the Year for 2024. This team is selected based on performances in ODI cricket throughout the year. This time, players from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Afghanistan dominate the list, while no players from top teams like Australia, India, or England have made it. The reason for this is that the 2024 T20 World Cup was held, and as a result, fewer ODI matches were played. As for India, under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, the team only played one ODI series in 2024, which they lost to Sri Lanka.
ICC ODI Team of the Year
- Saim Ayub (Pakistan)
- Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Afghanistan)
- Pathum Nissanka (Sri Lanka)
- Kusal Mendis (Sri Lanka)
- Charith Asalanka (Sri Lanka) [Captain]
- Sherfane Rutherford (West Indies)
- Azmatullah Omarzai (Afghanistan)
- Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka)
- Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pakistan)
- Haris Rauf (Pakistan)
- A.M. Gaznifar (Afghanistan)
The team includes four players from Sri Lanka, three each from Pakistan and Afghanistan, and one from the West Indies. Charith Asalanka has been appointed as the captain of the team. In previous years, India has had a strong presence in the ICC ODI Team of the Year, but this time, India only played three ODI matches throughout the year.
The ICC will also announce the Test Team of the Year and T20 Team of the Year, where Indian cricketers are expected to feature prominently. With the announcement of the ICC ODI Team of the Year, the ICC Awards season has officially begun. The announcement of the ICC Team of the Year for ODI, Test, and T20 formats will take place on January 24-25, and individual award winners will be revealed starting January 25.
