The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to take place in 2025, but prior to that, a mega player auction will be held. In this context, the IPL Governing Council has announced a new player retention policy. This season will introduce several new rules, including one concerning foreign players, which franchises have been requesting for quite some time.
In recent years, there have been instances where foreign players participated in the auction but opted out of playing just before the season began. This created difficulties for the franchises, leading to complaints directed at the IPL Governing Council, which has now implemented a new rule.
Foreign Players Must Participate in the Mega Auction
Under the new regulations set by the IPL Governing Council, any foreign player who fails to register for the mega player auction will be barred from participating in the subsequent season’s auction. This clearly means that foreign players must take part in the mega auction.

Two-Year Ban for Opting Out of the Season
Franchises and fans are likely to welcome this new rule. In recent seasons, several players have chosen to withdraw from playing just before the season, often citing workload as an excuse. According to the new regulation, if a franchise selects a player during the auction and that player subsequently declines to play before the season starts, they will face a two-year ban from participating in the IPL. Additionally, that player will not be able to register for the player auction during that time.
