Delhi Capitals made a significant change to their team ahead of IPL 2025 by removing Ricky Ponting from the position of head coach. Ponting, who had been with the team for a long time, was an integral part of the tournament. However, the former Australian captain is keen to take on a coaching role with another IPL team. As one of Australia’s most successful captains, Ponting mentioned that Delhi’s franchise might appoint an Indian as the new head coach.
After a seven-year tenure, Delhi Capitals decided to part ways with Ponting last month, primarily due to the fact that he did not secure a single title for the team. Despite this, Ponting is ready to rejoin the IPL in a coaching capacity. He suggested that Delhi Capitals might be searching for someone who can provide long-term commitment to the franchise beyond the season.

Ponting expressed his desire to return to coaching in the IPL, stating in an ICC podcast, “I would love to coach in the IPL again. Every year I have been involved with the IPL, I have had a great time, whether it was in the early days as a player or the two years I spent as coach of Mumbai. I spent seven seasons with the Delhi team. Unfortunately, we didn’t achieve the results I had hoped for, nor did we meet the franchise’s expectations. I was trying to win a title for the team, but it didn’t happen. The franchise is likely looking for an Indian head coach who can commit more time to them after the season.”
