Left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner was named New Zealand’s white-ball captain on Wednesday, replacing Kane Williamson. Williamson had stepped down from the role after the T20 World Cup in June. Having played 243 international matches for New Zealand, Santner will now lead the team in both ODI and T20 formats. He has previously captained the side in 24 T20s and four ODIs.

Santner will officially take charge during the T20 and ODI series against Sri Lanka, starting at the end of December. Reflecting on his appointment, Santner expressed his gratitude in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket, saying, “It’s a huge honour. Playing for New Zealand has been a childhood dream, and to captain the team in two formats is very special.”

New Zealand’s head coach, Gary Stead, praised Santner’s leadership qualities. He described him as a team player who leads from the front in all aspects of the game. Stead also highlighted Santner’s calm demeanour and the immense respect he commands in the dressing room.

This new role marks a significant milestone in Santner’s career, as he aims to continue New Zealand’s legacy in white-ball cricket. His experience and composed approach are expected to bring stability and success to the team in the upcoming challenges.
