Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, Team India won the T20 World Cup title in June this year. Following this historic victory, Rohit announced his retirement from T20I cricket. Now, with the World Test Championship (WTC) final set to be played next year, Team India is once again a strong contender for the final. Amidst this, social media claims that Rohit Sharma may retire from ODIs and Tests after the WTC final. In the meantime, his childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, made a significant statement.
Dinesh Lad’s Comments on Rohit Sharma’s Retirement
Dinesh Lad has dismissed the rumors surrounding Rohit Sharma’s retirement. In an interview with Dainik Jagran, Lad stated, “I’m not saying Rohit will announce his retirement after the World Test Championship; he might do so. However, as he ages, it seems likely he could retire from Tests. This could be because he wants to stay fit for ODI cricket. However, I promise that Rohit Sharma will play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. The kind of cricket Rohit is playing is incredible.”

Will Rohit Play in the 2027 ODI World Cup?
Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, Team India had an impressive performance last year, winning 10 consecutive matches in the tournament but falling just short of the title. Rohit scored 597 runs at an average of 54.27 in 11 matches. The next edition of the ODI World Cup is set to take place in 2027, which means Rohit will be 39 years old by then. If the tournament occurs between September and November, he will turn 40. Therefore, if Rohit wishes to play in the 2027 World Cup, he will need to focus heavily on his fitness.
Reflecting on the loss in the 2023 final, Dinesh Lad mentioned, “Rohit was nervous after the final defeat, but he had to play for the country. You must have seen how he is always ready to play for his nation. He aims to continue playing for the country. Apart from that day, Rohit has always had confidence; throughout the World Cup, he was batting positively. He was indeed nervous after the defeat because it was the World Cup final, and they had won all the matches to reach that point. The biggest aspect of that match was that Rohit got out early.”
