“Rohit Will Step Down as Captain If…,” Sunil Gavaskar Makes a Big Claim About the Indian Skipper

Rohit has been batting at the No. 6 position instead of opening in the last two Test matches, but this change hasn’t yielded results for him so far.

Rohit Sharma, Sunil Gavaskar

Former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has made a significant claim about captain Rohit Sharma. Gavaskar believes that if Rohit’s poor form continues, he may step down from the captaincy. The Indian skipper has been struggling with his form lately, facing criticism from fans and cricket experts alike.

Rohit has been batting at the No. 6 position instead of opening in the last two Test matches, but this change hasn’t yielded results for him so far. He has failed to play a big innings in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series against Australia. Gavaskar opines that Rohit won’t wait for the selection committee’s decision regarding his captaincy. If his form doesn’t improve in the upcoming matches, he might resign from the role on his own.

Speaking to an Australian sports channel, Gavaskar said, “I think Rohit will get an opportunity to play in the next few matches, but if he doesn’t score runs by the end of the series, he might take a decision. He is a very committed cricketer and wouldn’t want to be a burden on the team. Rohit cares deeply about Indian cricket, and if his form doesn’t improve, I believe he will step down as captain.”

Struggles in the Middle Order

During the Australia tour, Rohit opted to bat at No. 6 instead of opening. This was the first time in six years that he batted in the middle order. In the Adelaide Test, he managed scores of 3 runs off 23 balls and 9 runs off 26 balls. In the third Test, Rohit again batted in the middle order, coming to the crease when India was at 44/4. Rain on the third day limited his time at the crease, and on the fourth day, he was dismissed for 10 runs off 10 balls.

A Tough Year for Rohit

Rohit’s performance in Test cricket this year has been below par. In 24 innings, he has scored 607 runs at an average of 26.39. Before the Australia tour, he managed just 91 runs in the three-match home Test series against New Zealand.

Retirement Speculations

Speculations about Rohit retiring from Test cricket gained momentum on social media after his dismissal in the recent Test match. The way he walked back to the pavilion, holding his gloves, fueled these rumors. Earlier this year, Rohit retired from T20 internationals after leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup. His performances in the red-ball format have been underwhelming in recent times, raising questions about his future in the format.
