The Gabba Test between Team India and Australia ended in a draw. On the final day, the match was called off due to poor light and rain interruptions. This result brought significant changes to the ICC World Test Championship (2023-25) points table, with both teams’ points being updated. New scenarios have emerged for Team India’s chances of making it to the WTC 2025 final. Let’s take a look at what Team India needs to do to secure their spot after the Gabba Test draw.
South Africa at No. 1, Australia at No. 2, and India at No. 3
South Africa continues to lead the points table with 63.33% points. Australia remains at the second spot, while Team India holds on to the third position. After the third Test, Australia has 58.89% points, and India has 55.88% points, reflecting the updated standings.
India Must Win Both Remaining Tests
With the Gabba Test ending in a draw, the series is now tied. India and Australia had previously won one match each. Following the third Test draw, the path to the WTC final has become clearer for Team India. They must win both of the remaining matches to qualify directly for the World Test Championship final next year. If India wins both matches, they will have 60.52% points, securing their spot in the final. In this case, Australia will be out of the race. However, if South Africa wins even one Test against Pakistan, they will also qualify for the final, setting up a clash between India and South Africa.

Other Scenarios to Consider
If Team India manages to win only one of the remaining two matches and the other ends in a draw, they will have to rely on Sri Lanka. After the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), Australia will play a two-match series against Sri Lanka. India will need Australia to lose that series to ensure their qualification. If Australia wins the series against Sri Lanka, they will knock India out of contention.
