Dhananjaya de Silva was born on September 6, 1991, in Hambantota, Sri Lanka. His early life was marked by challenges and perseverance. Like many others in his country, Dhananjaya’s village was affected by the devastating Tsunami wave in 2005. He began his cricket journey at Deberawewa National School in Tissamaharama, Hambanthota, and later moved to Galle. After a brief stint at Mahanama College Colombo, he settled at Richmond College, Galle, where he played senior school cricket.
Notably, he captained the Richmond first XI cricket team during the 2010/2011 season. Despite the tragic loss of his father, Ranjan de Silva, who was a politician and was murdered by an unidentified gunman in front of their Ratmalana house in May 2018, Dhananjaya continued to pursue his cricket career. Representing Sri Lanka in all formats of the game, he has made significant contributions to the national team. His versatility as a right-handed batter and a right-arm off-break bowler has earned him recognition, and he currently captains the national team in Test cricket.
