On April 30, 1983, Gordon Greenidge scored a century in a match against India while thinking of his daughter Ria, who was very ill in Barbados. Ria, just two-and-a-half years old, was fighting for her life due to a kidney infection. Greenidge and his teammate, Desmond Haynes, put on a partnership of 296 runs in reply to India’s 457 in the match. After the third day of the game, Greenidge returned to Barbados, but sadly, Ria passed away two days later.
West Indies fast bowler Winston Davis, who played his first Test match in that game, said that Greenidge didn’t talk about Ria’s health. Davis remembered that Greenidge was a quiet man, and though it was a tough time for him, he kept it to himself.
In a 2011 interview, Greenidge spoke about this difficult time, saying that Ria was admitted to the hospital just before he left for the match, and her condition got worse. He described Ria as an “old soul,” saying she could talk like an adult, even though she was so young.
Later that year, when Greenidge played against India again, he scored 194 runs. He felt that Ria might have been trying to send him a message, and he explained that during tough times, you can either dwell on the sadness or try to move forward. If you don’t move on, the sadness can take over.
