How India Can Reach the World Test Championship Final 2025? All Scenarios

The Indian team is set to play a two-match Test series against Bangladesh, with the first match scheduled for September 19. The BCCI has announced the squad for the opening game, and this series is crucial for India as they aim to secure a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Given the importance of these matches, Rohit Sharma and his team will be careful not to underestimate Bangladesh, who are riding high on confidence after their victory against Pakistan.

India’s Road to the WTC Final: 10 Test Matches Ahead

India currently sits at the top of the World Test Championship 2023-25 points table, having played nine matches, winning six, and losing two, with a PCT of 68.52. The team still has 10 Test matches left to play, with series lined up against Bangladesh (2 Tests), New Zealand (3 Tests), and Australia (5 Tests). A 2-0 win in the upcoming Bangladesh series could raise India’s PCT to 74.24, but this alone won’t guarantee a spot in the WTC final, as eight more matches will still remain.

India Must Win at Least 6 Tests

To reach the WTC final, India will need to win at least six of their remaining 10 Tests. With six victories, their PCT would be 64.03, which could be enough to secure a place in the final. However, India’s fate might also depend on the results of other teams. Winning all the matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand at home and at least one match in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia will be crucial for India’s chances. Historically, India has performed well at home, which could work in their favor as they look to dominate these key series.

India’s Struggles in the Previous WTC Finals

India has reached the WTC final twice but has fallen short both times—once against New Zealand and once against Australia. Australia, who currently holds the second spot on the points table, is once again a strong contender to make it to the final. They have won 8 of their 12 Tests, with a PCT of 62.50.
