India’s bowling performance on the Australia tour has been average, with only Jasprit Bumrah standing out. As a result, former cricketers and fans have been calling for experienced pacer Mohammed Shami to be included in the squad. Initially, reports suggested that Shami might join the team for the final two Tests. However, a new twist has emerged, and it appears he might not fly to Australia after all.
According to media reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may refrain from sending Shami due to fitness concerns. Indian captain Rohit Sharma had earlier stated that the doors were open for Shami’s return but emphasized that there was no rush. Rohit also mentioned that Shami had been dealing with swelling in his knee and was preparing to regain match fitness by playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Bengal.
A recent fitness test conducted on Shami reportedly revealed that he is not yet ready for the rigors of five-day cricket. As a result, the BCCI may hold back from sending him to Australia. Instead, Shami is expected to participate in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy quarterfinals at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where his fitness will be further assessed.

Rohit had earlier confirmed the knee swelling issue, saying, “The doors are open for Shami, but his knee has swollen again after playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. We are monitoring his situation and don’t want to put any pressure on him for a quick return.” Despite the growing pressure on Rohit to include Shami in the team, it seems the pacer’s comeback will take some more time.
