Ahead of the five-match T20 series against England, India’s vice-captain Axar Patel stated on Monday that only the opening pair has been finalized, while the rest of the batting order remains flexible. The Indian team will play the first match at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
When asked about frequent changes in the batting order, Axar said, “It’s not just about me; it applies to everyone in the team.” He added, “Since the beginning of 2024, we decided that the opening pair would be fixed, but players batting from No. 3 to No. 7 must remain adaptable based on conditions, team combinations, and match-ups.”
Axar further explained, “There is no fixed order where a player will always bat in a specific position. This applies to everyone between No. 3 and No. 7. The final decision will be made during practice sessions.” He emphasized the importance of tactical flexibility in T20 cricket, stating, “Using the right batter at the right time is crucial in T20s.”
Talking about leadership responsibilities, Axar said, “It has only been a day since we arrived here. I have discussed things with captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir. The leadership group carries extra responsibility, but not much has changed. We have a stable T20 team, and there’s no additional pressure.”
He further added, “As part of the leadership group, we need to make tough decisions. Trusting each other and making the right calls is important. We also discuss how to move forward positively and not dwell on past matches before heading into the next series.”
Welcoming the return of senior pacer Mohammed Shami, Axar said, “He last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, and since recovering, he has performed well in the Syed Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare Trophy. The return of a senior player boosts the team’s morale.”
