The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the India Cricket Team squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour. There were many surprises in the squad that no one saw coming. Social media is abuzz with some bizarre choices and people are saying that BCCI and the Head Coach Gautam Gambhir have shown favouritism towards a few players while ignoring a few who have performed well for India.
Abhishek Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad were not selected in the T20I squad despite making loads of runs in the series against Zimbabwe. The left handed opener scored a 47 ball century while Gaikwad dominated with bat in almost all of the matches. Riyan Parag scored only 24 runs in the series and he is named in both the T20I and ODI squad for the Sri Lanka tour.
Sanju Samson was sidelined from ODIs despite scoring a century in his last outing for India. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja have been dropped from ODIs. Washington Sundar has found a place in both T20I and ODI squad. Suryakumar Yadav has been named captain of the T20I team and Hardik Pandya has been removed from even the vice captaincy.
A major change in the squad was that Shubman Gill has been named the vice captain in both T20Is and ODIs. Coach, Gambhir and BCCI selection committee is definitely thinking of him as the next captain of India. Gill was struggling to even find a place in the T20I squad. The decision to name him as vice captain and leaving out Abhishek Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad is not sitting well with the fans.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have returned from the break and will play in the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
