KL Rahul overlooked for Delhi Capitals’ captaincy? Karthik unveils DC’s new skipper for IPL 2025

A major point of discussion for DC will be Rahul’s batting position.

Indian all-rounder Axar Patel is gearing up for a fresh challenge as he takes on the role of captain for Delhi Capitals in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik seemingly disclosed this development on Cricbuzz’s HeyCB with DK show on YouTube, though the franchise has yet to make an official statement.

Axar, who has been a key part of Delhi Capitals since 2019, was retained for a massive INR 18 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The 30-year-old briefly led DC in IPL 2024 when he stepped in for Rishabh Pant for one match. However, his appointment as the full-time captain comes as a surprise, especially since the team secured KL Rahul at the auction.

Rahul, a seasoned IPL skipper, has previously led Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, bringing significant leadership experience. Despite this, DC has opted to hand over the reins to Axar. Notably, Axar was also named vice-captain of India’s T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against England, further solidifying his leadership credentials.

Karthik extended his best wishes to Axar on the show, saying, “Wishing Axar Patel all the best for his new role as India’s T20I vice-captain. It’s a great opportunity for him. He will also be captaining Delhi Capitals, which gives him a platform to lead and inspire. He has done this for Gujarat in domestic cricket as well, so I wish him success.”

With Axar taking charge, KL Rahul will play purely as a batter in IPL 2025, marking the first time since 2020 that he won’t be leading an IPL side. Delhi Capitals acquired Rahul for INR 14 crore, recognizing his vast experience. The 32-year-old has previously captained Punjab Kings in 2020 and 2021 and led Lucknow Super Giants from 2022 to 2024.

A major point of discussion for DC will be Rahul’s batting position. While he has excelled as an opener for PBKS and LSG, he has also adapted well to the middle order for India, particularly at No. 5 in ODIs. Whether he continues as an opener or shifts to a new role will be crucial for Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2025 campaign.
