A mega auction is set to take place before the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), likely at the end of November or the beginning of December this year. Before that, all 10 franchises must submit their lists of retained and released players. The deadline for this is tomorrow (October 31), which coincides with the Diwali festival.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently announced new rules regarding retention. According to these rules, a franchise can retain a maximum of 6 players. If a team retains fewer than 6 players, they will have the opportunity to use a Right to Match (RTM) card during the auction.
Speculation about retained players has already begun even before the official list is released. Reports suggest that the Gujarat Titans (GT) may release Mohammad Shami, and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain KL Rahul might be included in the auction pool. Here’s a look at the potential retention lists for all 10 franchises:

DC wants to retain him, but there is considerable discussion about him being included in the auction pool.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
- Sunil Narine

There is a big question mark over Shreyas Iyer as many players are prioritized ahead of him on KKR’s list, but discussions have taken place between him and KKR management.
Punjab Kings (PBKS)
- Arshdeep Singh
They may also consider using the Right to Match card instead of retaining all players.
Rajasthan Royals (RR)
- Sanju Samson
- Yashasvi Jaiswal
- Riyan Parag
There is a significant question mark over Jos Buttler due to injuries, so it will be interesting to see what RR decides.
