Harmanpreet Kaur was born on 8 March 1989 in Moga, Punjab. Her father, Harmandar Singh Bhullar, played volleyball and basketball, while her mother, Satwinder Kaur, is a homemaker. Harmanpreet’s parents are baptised Sikhs. She has a younger sister, Hemjeet, who is an assistant professor at Guru Nanak College in Moga.

Harman’s father, once an aspiring cricketer, was her first coach. She began playing cricket at Gian Jyoti School Academy, 30 km from her home, where she trained under Kamaldeesh Singh Sodhi. In her early days, she often played with men. In 2014, she moved to Mumbai and started working for Indian Railways. Harmanpreet was inspired by cricketer Virender Sehwag.

She claimed to have earned a Bachelor of Arts from Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut, but an investigation found no records of her enrollment. Other sources suggest she studied at Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya in Jalandhar, Punjab.

Career

Harmanpreet Kaur made her ODI debut in March 2009 against Pakistan and her T20I debut in June 2009 against England. She quickly showed her talent by hitting 33 runs in a T20I match against England in 2010. In 2012, she captained India to victory in the Women’s Twenty20 Asia Cup final, and by 2013, she became the ODI captain. In 2014, she made her Test debut against England and took nine wickets in a Test against South Africa.

In 2016, she became the first Indian cricketer to sign with an overseas T20 franchise, playing for Sydney Thunder in Australia. Her actions included hitting the stumps with her bat after being given out and making critical remarks about the umpires during the post-match presentation. This incident made her the first female cricketer to receive a Level 2 sanction from the ICC.
